Work on U.S. 20 in East Dubuque begins March 31
DIXON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that weather permitting, construction on the intersection of U.S. 20 and Barge Terminal Road in East Dubuque will begin Monday, March 31. The 1.5-mile work zone is from Frentress Lake Road to just east of Barge Terminal Road.
The project will improve the safety of the intersection, which connects to a 100-acre logistics park. Work will add acceleration and deceleration lanes on both directions of U.S. 20. On westbound U.S. 20, an island will be installed to allow traffic to focus on oncoming traffic in one direction instead of all four lanes of traffic when entering or exiting Barge Terminal Road.
Also, the left turn lane for eastbound U.S. 20 at Barge Terminal Road will be eliminated. Access to the westbound U.S. 20 Frontage Road and Kramer Road will be restricted to traffic on westbound U.S. 20. A left turn lane will be added to eastbound U.S. 20 at Frentress Lake Road to provide access to the frontage road.
One lane of traffic will be open in each direction during the $13.6 million project, which is expected to be completed in November.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,000 miles of highway and nearly 10 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Five of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $16 billion of improvements statewide on 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges and 986 additional safety improvements.
