Foster Avenue ramp to outbound Kennedy to close May 4

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild the bridge carrying Foster Avenue over the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90), in Chicago, a ramp closure along with overnight lane closures are scheduled to begin, weather permitting, Monday, May 4.

By 5 a.m. Monday, May 4, the westbound Foster Avenue ramp to the outbound Kennedy will close for approximately three months. During that time, the public also should expect overnight lane closures on the outbound Kennedy approaching Foster Avenue between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. At least one outbound lane will remain open. The other Foster Avenue ramps to and from the Kennedy will remain open.

Foster Avenue continues to be closed at the bridge with a detour directing traffic to Nagel, Bryn Mawr, Milwaukee and Central avenues. Pedestrians and bicyclists also should continue to follow the posted detours.

The $25.2 million project is replacing the existing bridge, installing new LED lighting, modernizing traffic signals, constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and implementing drainage improvements.

The project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
